Battle Network 3 is a TERRIBLE game

Main Post:

Please forgive the clickbait title but this game as bamboozled me in the worst of ways. This is my third battle network game, shocking I know. The first two games were decent but there was a good amount that I didn't enjoy. The third game has so far been really strong, I think network travel has been greatly improved and have enjoyed the scenarios so far and had high hopes...

I got to the point in the game where I believe the game requires me to have a Long Sword E to progress... I don't have it and it seems like the only way to get it is beat the sword guys with an S rank which... Doesn't seem feasible with my current tools. I could try and buy better chips but that would involve grinding and who knows if they would even guarantee an S rank. I looked up what to do and was told that the fastest way to get the chip would be to start from the beginning which at this point seems like my only option...

There is a certain spot that has the Long Sword E but it is a one time deal and I already sold it. I hope there aren't people so obsessed with this series that they'll tell me this is my fault for trading in a chip I had no possibility of knowing would be vital to progression.

Yes the game does tell you not to trade in good chips but you shouldn't need to have a very specific chip that is super hard to get in average play just to progress. That is just bad game design. At least now I know never to make that mistake again but that is just ridiculous.

I was 5 hours into the game which you could maybe say isn't that long so it wouldn't take me that long to get back to where I was but that is such a slog. I thought about skipping to BN4 for now but that is apparently the worst so maybe I'll leave it for now.

Top Comment: You've been feeding everything to the chip trader this really is self inflicted. This exact thing happened in the previous games a few times so you really should have seen it coming. sordys are pretty easy to beat so what have you been keeping?

Battle network 3: a whole lot of "for nothing"

Main Post:

Hoo boy, this is gonna be a doozy. Battle network 3. The game in the series most people like to consider as the best in the series for its story, features and gameplay......and the one game in the series I can't wrap my head around as to why. So, since I like being a contrarian and think I have some good points to make, let me tell you exactly why I find a lot of what BN3 does is for nothing. I'll focus mostly on the story, which I'll assume everyone knows so I don't have to go over all of it, with additional gameplay nuisances mentioned when necessary.

Number 1: the N1 grand prix

The N1 grand prix. The first main arc of the game, which covers about 1/3-1/2 of the main story. A tournament with the purpose of determining the no.1 netbattler in the world, for which you have to explore the internet (which gets bigger and bigger) three times over just to qualify, forcing you to use folders with loadouts you're not used to (or that good to begin with). But you finally qualify and after some some more WWW stuff that happens, the big day finally arrives and the tournament begins. The tournament itself is fine as far as showmanship is concerned, but the game forces you once again to use prebuilt folders for half the scenario AND have installed the press program just to be able to traverse the damn area.

And on that note, let's talk about the press program. It is *very* annoying to have to constantly change your navicust loadout, removing programs that actually aid you in combat and adding those whole sole "purpose" is to let you walk through certain areas the game arbitrarily decides you can't traverse otherwise (looking at you as well darkmind and alpha areas). And it's not even a one off thing that's just implemented for this area alone. You have had to do this ever since you got the press data in Bubbleman's scenario and even through the qualifiers. And it will continue to have to be used for thorughout the rest of the game, be it the main story, side quests or simply traversing just to get to the freakin undernet. Elecman's scenario in Battle network 1, for how infuriating it is, is just a single dungeon at the very least, and once you're done with it you never have to revisit it ever again. But whatever, you manage to push through the forced folder and Hades area, find the victory data and advance through the next two rounds of the grand prix.

And how does the tournament end? The tournament is revealed to be a WWW plot, gets interrupted, a winner isn't declared and the whole thing gets cancelled. All of it, so that a winner isn't even declared in the end. It is very vexing whenever a story establishes a certain goal for the protagonist to achieve, a task to accomplish, only for the story to chicken out at the very end and convolute a reason as to why that goal isn't achieved. Battle network 4, for all of its supposed faults, actually determines a winner for its three tournaments every time. All the time spend running around the internet in the qualifying rounds, changing your navicust loadout constantly because of press areas, every task we've done for the sole purpose of winning the tournament; all of it was for nothing! Speaking of "for nothing"

Number 2: the undernet ranking and the gigafreeze scenario

So after the tournament ends and some more WWW plots happen, one of which nearly kills your dad and sets you up as an accomplice, it's time for the undernet scenario before the final area. And what is your goal for this scenario? Find Serenade, the number 1 ranked navi in the undernet, and obtain the gigafreeze program in order to stop Alpha, the prototype to the internet and the final boss, from absorbing all of the internet into itself and collapsing all of society.

And how do you do that? You have to earn an audience with Serenade first by climbing through the ranks and going through ALL of the areas you've previously been through (not just the internet, but ALL the previous dungeons as well) in order to find all of ranked navis. But even before that, you have to first earn the right to challenge the ranked navis by going to the undernet and beat the other navis who want to become ranked for clout. But how do you get to the undernet? You have to go through the beach area first to find the gate to the hades area which contains the ONLY PRESS ROAD to the undernet. And in the undernet, you need the darkmind program installed instead just so you can access pathways certain heel navis block.

All of that, just so you can start the actual scenario, which like I said, involves combing through ALL of the internet for the ranked navis, be it the overworld, dungeons, the undernet AGAIN or jack in spots, to find and either beat them to get their rank or accomplish the task they give you. Like going to the first dungeon in the school, finding the navi, only for him to criptically tell you to go to the hospital, find an origami bird, then go back to him. Or, go to the second for look for Roll, only for it to be a trap set up by the scrubs we beat and a total waste of time. OR, go BACK to the undernet to spring the trap set up by ranks 6 through 4 at the behest of rank 3 Copy Gutsman. Then, you have to jack out to find and fight the ranked 2 navi, who can be cryptically found in "the place of battle" (what?). Only after you have done all of THAT can you finally meet with Serenade and obtain the gigafreeze program.

So you do all of that, and Serenade warns you that only the chosen navis can wield the program, everyone else gets frozen forever, but undeterred you obtain the program and it accepts you as a chosen navi, just in time for Drillman of the WWW to release Alpha and run away with it to the undernet. Oh right, the plot! So you give chase, find and defeat Drillman, and obtain Alpha. But Bass appears and snatches Alpha right back, and Megaman decides to, right then and there, use the gigafreeze program in order to freeze both him and Alpha in time forever.....only for Bass to be revealed that he also is one of the chosen navis and catch the shot with one hand....

All of the time spent traversing through the overworld, internet, dungeons and jack in spots over and over again. All the changing of the navicust loadouts over and over again because of press and darmind. All of the fights and gauntlets endured to climb through the ranks. All the menial tasks accomplished just to obtain the gigafreeze. All for the gigafreeze to be a dud in the end, and Bass to be revealed as a chosen navi because OF COURSE HE IS! WHO ELSE COULD IT BE?! All that effort, wasted in a 1 minute cutscene. All of the padding, all of the busy work, for NOTHING!

Number 3: Endgame

So, with the gigafreeze turning out to be a dud, all our efforts wasted, Alpha in the hands of Wily and juuuust about to be unleashed, it's time for endgame and the final dungeon. And what a final dungeon it is. Invisible Alpha traps that send you back to the start of the area if you step on them? And they're only visible if you install ANOTHER plot program into the navicust, forcing you to change your loadout in the even final dungeon? Say it isn't so. And who do you find and the end of each area? Why, all previous defeated navis, of course, who, through machines Wily created, can fuse with their operators to achieve the full synchro state, something only Lan and Megaman could do prior, merging the two being in order to coordinate better with each other. But, since they're essentially one being, that also means if the navis are deleted, their operators will also die due to sharing the damage and getting their brains fried......eeeexcept that never actually happens and they're only unconscious, with no permanent damage to speak of. Because why go through with previously established risks? What was the point of mentioning it in the first place? Oh, right.

Aaanyway, what else happens? Let's see: Cossack, Bass's creator, tries to kill Bass by frying his own brain. That doesn't work, and that doesn't work. Wily gets absorbed by Alpha and was stated that should that happen, he should die, but doesn't and the same happens to Bass. Final boss time, and victory.

And now, it's finally time. After a hard fought battle against Alpha, our merged heroes stand victorious. As they make their way back, the last fragments of Alpha attempt to absorb Lan and Megaman. In order to give his brother the opportunity to escape, Megaman stays behind and sacrifices himself, saying his farewell and encouraging his brother one last time to get his act together. Prior to this, Lan had nightmares of this exact thing happening, now it is playing out right before his very eyes and he is powerless to stop it, resigning himself and accept his brother's sacrifice. Many months pass, and Lan talks to "Megaman" about what has been going on with him in the meantime, keeping his promise to get his act together and that he'll be receiving a replacement navi soon. The credits roll, showcasing various "what if" gag scenarios and Lan's life, and the game ends.....but then IMMEDIATELY afterwards the game pulls out all the stops to inform you that Megaman didn't actually die in his final "sacrifice", but was safe and sound inside an area not even Alpha could get through, and that Lan's father has finally pulled him out of it. Meaning that all those emotional build up to Megaman's death, all those moments tugging at your heart strings were ALL for nothing and you were silly for thinking this was the end. After all, Capcom needs its open ending for sequels!

Even keeping Bass alive in the end was for nothing, as they do nothing to expand his character moving on, being relegated back to secret post-game boss and even developing amnesia after the Alpha incident. He never reconciles with his creator Cossack (who is never seen again), never lets go of his hatred for humans or plays any meaningful role in the story. So everything, like I said from the very beginning, was all for nothing.

Top Comment: Does the game actually mention that the www members didn't die after full synchro? I definetely assumed they did or were comatose at the end of bn3 when I played it. (pretend wily and co didnt come back for later games, that's out of scope) Overall those points are valid, though I do personally enjoy the lore of the undernet rankings and how the gigafreeze thing reinforces bass's importance as one of the most cutting edge and unique navis

differences between the battle network 3-6?

Main Post:

Hi there,

I recently found out about the .exe games collection and I've been considering playing the games and preordering the collection on switch.

My question though is, are there any noteworthy differences between the games?

I mean like, the collection has battle network 1-6, but is there a difference between white vs blue, or red sun vs blue moon, or protoman vs colonel, or gregar vs falzar? or is it just pokemon formula 101?

I have dabbled in demi-kids light and dark, as well as fire and ice, and those games, despite being very poke-formulaic are different between each other, so I wanted to ask if the above listed games are actually different from each other, because I'd legit like to buy the collection. But if its the same between the different versions of 3-6, I might hold off for a bit.

another example is oracle of ages vs seasons, which despite being formulaic to links awakening, were 2 very different games.(despite having very similar items)

Also a second question. I got a free copy of starforce zerker x saurian years ago(circa 2014?) and I'd like to play that, but is it one of those games where I have to play the previous games or will it be fine if I started it up?

edit: I apologize for my ignorance

For 3 theres one exclusive form change in each, 5 exclusive gigachips, 1 sort of exclusive boss with sort of exclusive megachips, and then blue also has another fight thrown in. They also have different chip code rewards, shop contents, and some scripted fights are different.

4 has some exclusive scenarios in each version, exclusive forms, I believe some exclusive chips. Im much less knowledgeable about 4.

5 has a different team in the liberation mission, some exclusive chips, different forms, the story will heavily feature either protoman or colonel depending on the version.

6 is pretty much the same, different exclusive chips, form changes, etc but it also has a different final boss depending on the version as well as a different post game bossfight.

Why do you think battle network 3 is considered the best in the series?

Main Post:

I remembered it being the best from childhood but I just finished 2 and now I'm halfway through 3 again and I think I like the bosses better in 2 so far.

Top Comment: The ending of 3 is incredible, so story-wise it's one of the fan favorites. Combined with the sheer amount of stuff you can do postgame, raising viruses, solving the Secret Area challenges... you get a lot of value from MMBN3.

Unidentified network, Network 2 and network 3

Main Post:

I am having some kind of problem with my modem. When I connect it to my router it will not connect to the internet. When I hardwire my PC directly into my modem, it will show "unidentified network No internet access" Then if you let it sit for 5 minutes it will say "Network 2 No Internet access" then give it another 5-10 minutes it will say "Network 3 Connected" and then I can surf the internet.

Problem is no matter how long I leave it plugged into my router it will never connect to the internet and I am thinking that somehow my PC is eventually making it to the network that has internet but my router doesn't have the power to search for this weird additional network that is actually connected.

I have reset my modem AND router numerous times and it does not help the problem. I have tried multiple ethernet cables to make sure my wires aren't bad. My lap top goes through the same process to connect that my PC does. I tried to remove as many variables as possible.

I am not sure if any of this makes sense to anyone but I can't explain it otherwise. Is it possible to get into my modem settings to disable the first "unidentified network" and the second "Network 2"?

Anything helps at this point I really dont want to sit on the phone for another 2 hours trying to explain it to customer service.

Top Comment: "my PC is eventually making it to the network that has internet but my router doesn't have the power to search for this weird additional network that is actually connected" That network 1,2,3 stuff is just Windows being Windows. Has no bearing on your problem. It is normal for it to take some time for you computer to pickup an IP from the modem. Plug your router into the modem, computer into the router, and go into your router interface with a browser 192.168.1.1 probably, and see if it shows a WAN IP received from Spectrum and that DHCP is turned on to give IP's to your computers.
